Masks have been used in various cultures and traditions throughout the world for centuries. They play a significant role in the expression of self, cultural identity, and the exploration of human emotions and the desire to understand ourselves. These practices continue to exist today, even in the midst of technological evolution.
Masks are used in contemporary performance art, theater, and musical performances. Bands like Gwar and Slipknot come to mind. They have also become primary elements of varied horror franchises.
In this workshop, we will explore these ideas by using our various cultural and lived experiences to construct modern masks out of discarded items. We will build these masks around our personal identity experiences. Each individual will decide on an element of their experience and create a mask that will have a place in a subconscious tradition that we will discuss as we complete our masks. We will be making art pieces out of found and recyclable items, not reconstructing trash to then make more trash.
