For generations, Black hair has been a cultural centerpiece. Intertwined with family and celebration, belonging and exclusion, beauty, politics, self expression, and cultural policing, there’s no denying the powerful role it plays in the identities of millions. It’s no wonder, then, that it figures heavily in the work of many Black artists. As part of our Identity Exhibition, four exhibiting artists discuss with each other and the audience why they often focus on Black hair and its significance to contemporary art and their art practices. Free and open to the public.
