Kawandi Inspired Quilting with Sherry Whetstone

  • InterUrban ArtHouse 8001 Newton Street Overland Park, Kansas 66204 (map)

Sherry Whetstone, Fiber Artist and Instructor is back at the InterUrban Arthouse to teach Kawandi Quilting on Saturday, October 26th from 10:30 - 2:30.

Kawandi quilts, created by the East African Siddi women who reside in India,  are made by piecing together geometric shapes of repurposed clothing or fabric scraps. Each piece of fabric is bound together with a basic running stitch. This very unique type of quilting uses the quilt as you go method but with an interesting twist!

Sherry will provide the 7 "square and batting for your project. Students will need to bring enough fabric to cover a 7" surface. Fabric choices of cottons and loosely woven materials work best for the Kawandi technique.  For a more personal touch, feel free to bring  scraps from old clothing or repurpose projects that were never finished. This project is stitched entirely by hand. Students  may want to bring a light snack or beverage to enjoy in class.
